This SDL is located at the heart of the Estuary, adjacent to the Port of Foynes and the settlement of Foynes. The location includes a former commercial fuel jetty. The SDL is located close to the core commercial shipping lane and borders onto the main channel entrance into the Port of Foynes.

Development Considerations

Foynes Island is located within the Estuary adjacent to the existing  Port of Foynes and Foynes Town. The Port has identified a number  of key growth sectors involving new berthing facilities, onshore  infrastructure and the ability to accommodate larger vessels, to  serve wider markets in an efficient and competitive manner. This  SDL at Foynes Island has been identified as the optimal location  available to accommodate larger vessels, to serve wider markets and  to cater for the future expansion of the existing facilities.   The SDL has the capacity to cater for post-Panamax vessels and thus expand the options for both imports and exports, as well as  potential  transshipment facilities. Its close proximity to the existing  deepwater port will allow it to leverage the already substantial  investment in infrastructure and facilities, as well as to avail of the  well- established network of maritime and logistics organisations  which operate there. The Island traditionally facilitated port operations with an   operational oil jetty until the late 1970’s utilizing the deep water berth which still exists on the north western side of the Island which  was supported with infrastructural connections to the main port.   With extensive access to natural deep water the island provides  immediate access to the mainnavigation channel of the Estuary with no capital dredging required. . The SDL also benefits from access to the national road and rail network as well as the international airport at nearby Shannon. Acesss to 38 kVa power is available, with higher capacity available in the vicinity, and the site is also in close proximity to the national gas transmission network. High speed broadband and potable water are available to the site.
